CHAPTER-6
THE TEXTUAL ORCHESTRATION OF
PATTERNS
Exercise
6.1 pick out all the words or phrases in text A (i),
which contain the meaning 'punch', whether as a noun (a punch) or as a verb
(punching, puncher etc.). How are these like, and unlike, the 'time' words in
text E?
Text A (i)
Coetzer the first man to come out aggressive intent. Aims
to throw and overhead right. Nevertheless, straight away Bruno flicking out
that ramrod left jab. Coetzer slightly the taller man. Stands six foot four. Moreover,
against Riddick Bowe the made a very quick start. They fight three months ago. And
here he's throwing everything from the word go. In addition, he has Bruno backed
up in the corner. Bruno backs on the ropes. Just clings and holds on. And Coetzer
has come out here throwing leather. His coach Alan Taweel said that he is
sometimes a slow starter. He's not shown that. There a little little left from
Bruno over the top. Thudded into the head of Coetzer. And that was his first
scoring punch from Bruno. But Coetzer once again in the attack, with Bruno
holding on behind the referee's back. But Roy Francis spotted that one. Trying
to land clubbing rights into the head of Cotzer. But once again he's on to the
offensive.
Text E
I cannot understand the time. It is eternity now. I am
in the midst of it. It is about me in the sunshine; I am in it, as the
butterfly floats in the light-laden air. Nothing has to come; it is now. Now is
eternity; now is the immortal life. Here this moment, by by this tumulus, on
earth, now; I exist in it. The years, the centuries, the cycles are absolutely
nothing; it is only a moment since this tumulus was raised; in a thousand years
more, it will still be only a moment. To the soul there is no past and no
future; all is and will be ever, is now. For artificial purposes, time is
mutually agreed on, but really, there is no such thing. The shadow goes on upon
the dial; the index moves round upon the clock, the clock and what is the
difference? There may be the time for clock may make time for itself; there is
none for me.

Having thought out a name for his puppet, he started
his work with great determination. He made his hair, his forehead, and his eyes
in a very short time.
As soon as his eyes were finished imagine his
bewilderment when he saw tem moving and looking at him When Geppetto saw those
two wooden eyes looking at him, he did not like him at all, and he said
angrily, Naughty wooden eyes, why are you starting at me?
But no answered. After the eyes he made the nose; but
as soon as it was finished., it began to grow. It grew, and in a few minutes
time it was as long as if there was no end to it.
Poor Geppetto worked fast to shorten it; but the more
he cut it off, the longer that insolent nose became.
After the nose, he made the mouth; but before he has
finished it, it began to laugh and poke fun at him. Stop laughing laughing I
say he shouted menacingly. The mouth stopped laughing, and stuck out its
tongue. However, Geppetto did not want to spoil the puppet, he pretended not to
see it, and continued his work. After the mouth, he made the chin, then the
neck, the shoulders, the stomach, the arms and the hands.
Text D (ii)
Geppetto the wood carver lived in a little wooden
house with his cat, Figaro, and a goldfish called Cleo. He made lots of
marvellous toys, but he had no children to play with them. One day he made a
puppet from some pinewood, and put strings on it so that it could dance. He called
the puppet Pinocchio. When he went to bed that night, Geppetto looked out and
saw the bright Evening star shinning in the sky. Look! He said to Figaro, it is
a wishing star! So Geppetto made a special wish, I wish I may, I wish I might
have the wish I wish to night!
His secret wish was that little Pinocchio might become
a real boy!
At that moment, the room where Pinocchio lay began to
fill with dazzling bright light. Out of the light steeped the Blue Fairy of the
Evening star, who had heard Geppetto's secret wish. The fairy waved her wand
over Pinocchio, saying
Little puppet, made of pine,
Wake! The gift of life is thine!
