LANDFORMS OF THE EARTH
1. Landforms
Different types of landforms are found on the earth. These forms were not present at the time of origin of the earth. Because of the movements of the earth these forms were formed. These are not found as it is forever. The movements of the earth bring such types of changes on the earth. Such landforms are mainly divided into three types. They are as follows:
(i) Mountain         (ii) Plateau  (iii) Plain
(i) Mountain
Mountain is one part of the landforms. Generally the irregular landforms raised from the surface of the earth is called mountain. But by the theory of the Geography, the Mountain's altitude be more than 610 meters. Less than such height landform is hill. On the basis of structure or formation mountains are divided into four types. They are as follows:
1.     Fold Mountain
2.     Block Mountain
3.     Volcanic Mountain
4.     Residual Mountain
a. Fold Mountain
The same type of rock does from the whole part of the earth. The earth is formed by soft and hard rocks. Some places are formed by compressed rocks and some are not. The volume of the rocks is expanded by the heat and shrinks by the cooling. This process brings horizontal movement on the earth. This type of movement gives pressure to the land by the sides. Because of this pressure surface of the lands be shrink. There will be up and down on the surface of the earth and mountain is built up. This type of mountain is called Fold Mountain.
The upper part of the Fold Mountain is called anticline and the lower part of the Fold Mountain is called syncline. The peaks and valleys are the examples of anticline and syncline.
b) Block Mountain
Rifts are found in the different places of the earth. If there is vertical movement of the earth, the edge of the rift may be depressed or raised. The raised portions are called Block Mountain. The depressed place between the Block Mountains is called rift valleys. Satpura of India and Southern and northern high lands of Scotland are the examples of the Block Mountain.
